Jennifer Garner and her mum Patricia cheer on runners in the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot

It's always a good idea to try to burn off a few calories before indulging in Thanksgiving dinner.

Jennifer Garner and her mother Patricia appeared to be doing just that on Thursday morning when they were spotted at the annual Pacific Palisades Turkey Trot in the tiny Los Angeles neighbourhood.

The 44-year-old, who cheered on runners, wore a brown event T-shirt over a white long-sleeved T-shirt, black leggings and bright yellow sneakers.
Her brunette tresses were pulled back into a ponytail and she covered her eyes with a pair of shades.

Patricia wore a blue and white-stripe T-shirt with a grey sweatshirt tied around her waist, jeans and black New Balance sneakers.

The duo were joined by a male friend who gamely walked the family's golden retriever.

The Turkey Trot, a 5k or 10k run which starts and finishes at Palisades High School, kicked off at 8am and raises money for the Hearts With Hope Foundation.

The organisation brings medical, dental and administrative care to children living with congenital heart disease throughout the world.

Whether Jen and Pat were actually taking part in the run is open to question as the actress was pulling a cart that she usually uses for shopping or to transport one of the three children she shares with estranged husband Ben Affleck, 44.
